Music of the United Kingdom, from Vera Lynn, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bowie to Punk, Britpop, Grime and today
Modern British popular music grew out of wartime song, skiffle clubs and the electric blues and rhythm & blues booming out of London, Liverpool and Birmingham. Vera Lynn's wartime ballads and Lonnie Donegan's acoustic skiffle craze in the fifties gave teenagers across the country a reason to pick up guitars, followed by Cliff Richard and the Shadows and the sixties explosion of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks and Dusty Springfield. By the end of the decade and the early seventies, British bands had branched into folk revival with Fairport Convention and Nick Drake, heavy metal and hard rock with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, progressive and glam rock with Genesis, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Elton John and Queen, and the Anglo-American pop perfection of Fleetwood Mac.
In 1977 the Sex Pistols and The Clash tore the rulebook up, and the post-punk, synth-pop and alternative scenes that followed—Joy Division and New Order in Manchester, Kate Bush, The Cure, The Jam, Iron Maiden, Eurythmics, The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, The Stone Roses and The Prodigy—reshaped independent and electronic music across Europe. In the nineties Bristol's trip-hop pioneers Massive Attack and Portishead rose alongside the Britpop rivalry of Blur, Oasis and Pulp, the global pop of the Spice Girls and Radiohead's turn from guitar rock to electronic experiment. Since 2000 Coldplay, Gorillaz, Dizzee Rascal's Bow E3 grime, Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys, Burial's South London dubstep, Florence + The Machine, Adele, PJ Harvey, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Dua Lipa, Sam Fender, Little Simz, Wet Leg and Charli xcx have kept British songwriting and club culture at the center of popular music.
The list gathers 55 records from 1942 to 2025, one by each artist; the full sweep of Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish traditional music, British jazz and the choral and orchestral tradition from Elgar and Britten to the Proms would each need a list of their own. About 43 hours of music, 5 days of a few records each.
