Music of Indonesia, from Waldjinah, Koes Plus, Rhoma Irama, Chrisye and Iwan Fals to Dewa 19, Sheila on 7, Tulus, Hindia and today
Across an archipelago of thousands of islands, modern Indonesian popular music took shape where local traditions met global pop, rock and film music. In Surakarta, Waldjinah became the queen of kroncong—the string-band song style rooted in seventeenth-century Portuguese-Indonesian port music—and bridged it to Javanese langgam, while in Jakarta Benyamin Sueb brought Betawi gambang kromong comedy and street song into the recording studio, and the harmony trio Bimbo and the bands Panbers and Koes Plus wrote the foundational canon of Indonesian pop and beat music. During the seventies and eighties God Bless introduced hard and progressive rock to Jakarta stadiums, Rhoma Irama fused Malay orkès, Indian tabla and electric rock guitars into modern dangdut alongside Elvy Sukaesih, and a golden generation of songwriters and singers—Chrisye, Ebiet G. Ade, Iwan Fals, Gombloh, Fariz RM and Vina Panduwinata—chronicled urban life, love and social conscience from acoustic ballads to city-pop synthesizers, while Detty Kurnia carried Sundanese pop sunda from West Java onto international stages.
In the nineties the tragically short-lived slow-rock star Nike Ardilla, the dangdut singer Evie Tamala and the quirky pop-rock of Potret shared the airwaves with a new wave of bands that defined the post-Suharto Reformasi era: the bluesy street rock of Slank, the arena pop-rock of Dewa 19, Gigi and Padi, the Yogyakarta indie-pop phenomenon Sheila on 7, the retro sixties-style pop of Naif, and the voices of Melly Goeslaw, Krisdayanti, Rossa, Glenn Fredly and Agnez Mo. In the 2000s Peterpan (later Noah), Ungu, Nidji and Letto dominated radio while an independent scene flourished from Bandung to Jakarta: Mocca's swing-pop, White Shoes & The Couples Company, Sore, Efek Rumah Kaca's sharp political indie rock, Payung Teduh's acoustic kroncong-jazz, Superman Is Dead's Balinese punk and Burgerkill's Bandung metal, alongside Didi Kempot's Javanese campursari heartbreak anthems and Via Vallen's fast East Javanese dangdut koplo. Since the 2010s Tulus, Raisa, Isyana Sarasvati, Barasuara, Fourtwnty, Danilla, Pamungkas, Hindia, Nadin Amizah, Mahalini, Tiara Andini and Bernadya have led a new era of Indonesian songwriting and streaming pop, while Rich Brian and NIKI carried Jakarta hip hop and R&B to global audiences.
The list gathers 55 records from 1960 to 2024, one by each artist, with Waldjinah, Benyamin Sueb, Rhoma Irama and Elvy Sukaesih in the collections that gather their classic sides; the court and village gamelan orchestras of Java and Bali, Sundanese kacapi suling and degung, and the many regional traditions from Sumatra and Kalimantan to Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua would each need a list of their own. About 42 hours of music, 5 days of a few records each.
